The leg back to the coast: a little over an hour to the north-east, island to Riviera. On this half of the pair the difficult end is the beginning rather than the arrival. Getting off Mallorca on an August morning is a question of slots and taxi time; landing at Nice is about as straightforward as arriving anywhere in Europe gets.
REQUEST A QUOTEFlown this way the two ends swap roles. Palma - 17,504 business-aviation movements in 2023 - is one of the largest holiday-charter airports in Europe, and in the peak weeks the whole difficulty is getting airborne at all: the departure slot, the handling window and the taxi out are what stretch the morning, never the supply of aeroplanes. Nice, with 37,425 movements and second place in Europe behind Paris Le Bourget, is the opposite sort of airport to arrive at in a private aircraft: business traffic goes through a terminal of its own, and there are more suitable jets on this stretch of coast than on any other in the Mediterranean. Eastbound the upper winds are more often behind you than on the nose, so this half of the pair frequently runs a few minutes quicker than the crossing out - the modelled figure below takes no view on that.
The departure is fixed: one island airport, and a queue you share with a great deal of package traffic. The decision on this page is where you land on the French side, and the two candidates are separate airports rather than two terminals of the same one.
| Airport | Codes | Distance | Suits you if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palma de Mallorca | PMI / LEPA | 589 km | Where the sector starts, and the point the distance on this page is measured from. A very large holiday-charter airport with a general aviation terminal of its own, where in August the taxi out and the departure slot are the variables rather than the availability of an aircraft. An early departure hour is worth far more to you here than a fast aeroplane is. |
| Nice Cote d'Azur | NCE / LFMN | arrival | Where you land. 37,425 business-aviation movements in 2023, second in Europe behind Paris Le Bourget, and business traffic handled in a terminal separate from the scheduled one - which is the whole point of finishing at a field like this rather than at another holiday airport. It is also the easiest place in the Mediterranean from which to arrange the next leg, because the choice of aircraft on this coast is deeper than anywhere else. |
| Cannes Mandelieu | CEQ / LFMD | arrival alternative | Twenty-four kilometres west of Nice, and a different airport rather than a second terminal of it: its own codes, its own handling and its own limit on aircraft size. Land here if the house is on the Croisette or the party is going to the Golfe-Juan marinas. The 589 km on this page is measured to Nice Cote d'Azur, so tell us early if you want Mandelieu and we will measure the sector to it and check the aeroplane against the field rather than assume. |
| Menorca | MAH / LEMH | departure alternative | You are actually starting from the third island rather than from Mallorca. A smaller field with fewer stands, where the aircraft normally has to be positioned in for you instead of found waiting - which is worth telling us early rather than late, because it is the positioning and not the flying that carries the cost. |

589 km, or 318 nautical miles, is a light-to-midsize sector with an hour of cruise in it at most. Coming home the hold decides the aircraft more often than the seat count does - people rarely go back with less than they took out. On this direction there is a second question as well: whether the aeroplane is already on the island or has to be flown in to collect you.
Seven to eight passengers, a stand-up cabin and 2.55 cubic metres of hold. The common midsize answer on the Balearics run, and the one that settles the luggage question before it is asked on the way home.
See the Cessna Citation XLS+ ›Six to eight passengers with a 2.27 cubic metre hold, short-field performance to spare and a quick turnaround - which on an island morning in August is worth more than cruise speed. The default type on Balearic sectors.
See the Embraer Phenom 300 ›The newest of the three, with a flat floor and a quieter cabin - worth more than it sounds on an evening sector with tired children aboard. Ask about it when comfort rather than price is deciding.
See the Cessna Citation Latitude ›Each of the three has a page of its own in our fleet. A heavier cabin is arranged on this sector when the group needs one, and on the short Balearic hops the Citation Bravo is often simply the aeroplane already on the island.

We have found no published price for Palma de Mallorca to Nice from a source we would be willing to reprint, so treat the figure above as a floor. It comes off our own curve rather than out of the air: the starting prices we publish at the distances either side of this one are €5 000 at 547 km and €5 200 at 603 km, and 589 km falls on the same step.
On the leg home the first thing that moves the number behaves differently from the way out. Positioning comes first, and this direction is frequently flown by an aircraft that took somebody out to the island and is due back on the coast anyway - that is the cheap version. The expensive version is a jet flown down empty to collect you. Whether the aeroplane waited comes second, and on a week's stay it will not have done: it dropped its passengers and left, so this is the second flight you are buying rather than the back half of the first. Third the date, and read from this end the peak is an event of its own - the last weekend of the school holidays is when everybody on Mallorca wants to leave at once, while a Tuesday in June is close to the cheapest thing on the route. Fourth the hour, because the constraint at Palma is the departure window: a morning slot in the middle of the holiday wave is the hardest thing to obtain and the easiest thing to lose.
Mallorca has one long season with a very sharp peak inside it, and read from the going-home end that peak sits at the finish of the school holidays, when the whole of northern Europe wants to leave the same island on the same Saturday.
| Period | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| May | The island is open and the airport is still calm. Owners are coming out to open houses for the summer, which means legs in your direction are often the empty half of somebody else's trip out. | The easiest month of the season, and the best one in which to ask what the aircraft was doing before it collected you. A week or two of notice is usually plenty. |
| June to September | The season proper. Palma is handling holiday traffic at volume and on a Saturday morning a business jet is a small aeroplane in a very large queue - which on a departure is felt as a slot rather than as a delay. | Two to three weeks for a weekend. Ask us about a weekday instead, or about a midday departure between the holiday waves. |
| August | The tightest weeks, and the end of them the tightest of all. Slots and handling windows run out rather than aircraft, and a party that reaches the terminal late can lose the slot rather than simply the hour. | Six weeks for the last fortnight of the month. Give us a firm departure hour, and tell us whether it can move by one - that flexibility is often worth more than anything else you can offer. |
| October to April | The island empties and the fleet repositions north and east - to the coast, the UK and the Alps - for the winter, so the repositioning traffic runs in your direction for months. | The best window in the year for an empty leg going this way. Give us a flexible week and we will watch the repositioning traffic for you. |

For a good many parties Nice is a staging point rather than a destination, and it is the easiest place on the Mediterranean from which to arrange the next leg. If the aircraft is to carry on, or if part of the group is going elsewhere, tell us at the enquiry rather than on the day.
Monaco has no airport of its own, so the last few miles from Nice are flown by helicopter - minutes in the air against the best part of an hour on the coast road in season. Say so when you book the jet and the two are arranged together.
Helicopter transfers ›A natural continuation of the same trip: the aircraft that brings you here can carry straight on.
