The route at a glance

Flown this way round you are leaving the deepest pool of business aircraft in Europe outside London and arriving in a much smaller one. The EBAA recorded 37,425 business-aviation movements at Nice in 2023 against 13,835 at Malaga - close to three to one. Departing, that ratio works for you: on almost any date there is something on the Riviera that can fly you. What it does not solve is what the aeroplane does once it has landed in Spain, and that is the question this page keeps coming back to.

Distance is the great-circle figure between airport coordinates. Flight time is an estimate rather than a measured block time: it comes from a simple model fitted to the flight times Diamond Executive Aero Services already publishes on this website, it is the same figure in both directions, and the real one moves with routing, wind, slots and aircraft type. Your quotation carries the real schedule.

Which airports we use

Everything you decide on this route you decide before you take off. There are two fields you can leave from on the Riviera and the choice between them is about your morning and the size of your party; at the Spanish end there is one airport, it has a proper general-aviation front door, and there is nothing to arrange there beyond the car.

AirportCodesDistanceSuits you if
Nice Cote d'AzurNCE / LFMN1,260 kmAlmost everyone, and the field this page is measured from. Europe's second busiest business-aviation airport, with its own terminal away from the airline ones and the Monaco helicopter on the field - which is the reason a departure can normally be found at short notice even in season.
Cannes MandelieuCEQ / LFMDalternative departureYour day starts in Cannes or further west and you would rather not drive back to Nice. It takes business jets only up to a certain size, so the list of aircraft that can leave from there is shorter - give us the party and the luggage first and we will tell you whether it works before you plan around it.
Malaga Costa del SolAGP / LEMGarrivalWhere you land, and there is no second option worth naming. The general-aviation terminal is separate from the airline building, so the walk from the aircraft to the car is short, and it is the practical field for Marbella, Puerto Banus, Estepona and the whole Costa del Sol.

Aircraft for Nice to Malaga

1,260 km, or 681 nautical miles, is a two-hour coastal crossing well inside light and midsize range, so range is not what chooses the aeroplane. Going out to the Costa del Sol the hold does. Golf bags, a fortnight of luggage for a household and occasionally a dog all travel on this sector, and all three are bulky rather than heavy.

Embraer Phenom 300

The efficient answer for two to four people with normal luggage, and the easiest type to find at Nice at short notice - which matters more on the outbound leg than on any other part of the trip.

See the Phenom 300 ›

Cessna Citation XLS+

A stand-up cabin, which is what most people want once a sector runs past ninety minutes. It takes the golf bags without a conversation, and it is the usual choice for a family going out for the Marbella season.

See the Citation XLS+ ›

Hawker 800XP

A full galley, a separate lavatory and the largest hold of the three. This is the aeroplane to name when a household is moving out to the other house for the summer rather than going away for a week.

All three types are on our own fleet pages. Heavier cabins - Legacy 600 or 650, Challenger 605 - are arranged on this route on request.

What it costs

From €8 200 one way. Indicative starting price for this route, rounded down. The date, the aircraft actually available and airport fees move it — tell us your dates and we confirm within 30 minutes.

Nobody publishes a figure for this pair that we would be willing to reprint, so the number above is a floor rather than a price. It is an easy route to be open about, because what really drives the cost is simple to describe once you look at it from the departure end.

Leaving the Riviera you are almost never paying to bring an aircraft to you. Nice has close to three times Malaga's business-aviation traffic and far more based aircraft, so the jet that takes you west is usually already sitting there. What you are paying for is the other end. Once it has put you down in Spain it has no work waiting: it either turns round empty for the Riviera, or it stops on the ground at Malaga until you want to come back - and either of those is inside your quotation. So the useful conversation on this direction is not about the hourly rate at all. It is about whether you already know your return date, and whether the day you fly out can move.

For scale rather than as an offer: brokers publish an indicative European range of EUR 4,600-9,700 per flying hour for this class (undated), others publish from EUR 2,900-3,500 per hour (19.02.2026), and others USD 3,750-4,600 per hour (August 2026). Those are hourly rates for the class across Europe, not a price for this sector, and they carry no positioning, handling, parking or taxes. Send us your dates and the number of passengers and we will come back with a written figure.

The hourly ranges above are other people's published figures, printed so that you can sanity-check any quotation you are given, ours included. They are not our offer and they bind nobody. Only a written quotation from Diamond Executive Aero Services, against your own dates, is a price. Call +357 95 119759, 24/7.

When to fly, and when to book early

Both coasts peak in the same weeks, so there is no clever arbitrage to be had between a busy Riviera and a quiet Costa del Sol. Read from the departure end, the constraint that bites first is not the flying: it is Nice itself in high summer.

PeriodWhat happensWhat to do
MayThe best month on this route and the least appreciated. The Costa del Sol golf season is at its peak before the heat arrives, the Riviera is open, and neither end is yet under pressure.A week or two of notice is normally enough, and this is where the value on the whole route sits.
June to SeptemberThe main Mediterranean run in both directions at once. Owners move between two coasts, the Marbella season is at full stretch, and the two airports are working hard simultaneously rather than taking turns. Two to three weeks out, and longer if you need a particular cabin rather than whatever is free. Say early if the golf bags are coming.
AugustThe tightest weeks of the year, and on a departure the pinch is felt on the ground at Nice before it is felt in the air. Parking on the Riviera is under real pressure and the based fleet is committed, so an aircraft that could slip down to Spain for the morning simply is not free.Book well ahead. It is also the month to ask us about a Spanish-based aircraft coming up to collect you instead of a Riviera one - counter-intuitively, that is sometimes the cheaper way round.
October to AprilQuiet on both coasts. The Riviera fleet moves north and east for the Alpine ski season, which puts a good deal of one-way repositioning through the western Mediterranean in October and November. The best window of the year for an empty leg out of Nice. If your dates can move by a day, say so at the enquiry rather than after the quotation.

Onward from Malaga

Malaga is often one stop of a Spanish week rather than the end of the journey. Once the aircraft is in Spain the next leg is short, and it is usually cheaper than the one that got you there - which is also the answer to what the jet should do instead of waiting for you.

Malaga and Madrid

The natural second leg when the trip is business as well as property. We publish this pair as Madrid to Malaga and fly it in both directions on the same equipment.

Madrid to Malaga ›

Madrid to Barcelona

If the week continues up to Catalonia, this is the sector that closes the loop. Short, frequent, and easy to fit around a Malaga stay.

Madrid to Barcelona ›

Empty legs in the western Mediterranean

Aircraft moving between the Riviera, the Balearics and southern Spain generate one-way sectors constantly, and most of them appear at short notice.

Questions we get about this route

How long does Nice to Malaga take, and does the flight home take the same?
About 2 hours on a light or midsize jet over a great-circle distance of 1,260 km. That is a modelled estimate rather than a measured block time, and we publish the same figure for both directions - but this really is an east-west pair, and westbound you are flying into the prevailing flow rather than with it, so in practice the outbound is the more likely of the two to run long. The routing generally follows the Spanish Mediterranean coast rather than cutting inland. Allow roughly fifteen minutes on the ground at each end.
What actually happens when we land at Malaga?
Very little, and that is the point of arriving privately. France and Spain are both in the European Union and both in the Schengen area, so there is no routine border check and no customs entry for you or your baggage on this sector. You land at the general-aviation terminal, which is a separate building from the airline one, and the car meets the aircraft on that side. Carry photographic identification anyway - the crew and the handling agents will ask for it, and spot checks are permitted at any time. A pet is the one thing that is not automatic and needs its paperwork arranged before the day.
Is Malaga the right airport for Marbella?
Yes, and there is no serious alternative to weigh up. Malaga Costa del Sol is the field for Marbella, Puerto Banus, Estepona and that whole stretch of coast, which is why most of the private traffic to the Costa del Sol lands there. Its general-aviation terminal is separate from the main airline building, so the arrival is quick. Give us the final address and the car waits on the general-aviation side rather than at the terminal.
Should we leave from Nice or from Cannes Mandelieu?
From Nice unless the drive is genuinely the problem. Cannes Mandelieu is convenient if your morning starts in Cannes or further west, but it accepts business jets only up to a certain size, so the list of aircraft that can operate the sector from there is materially shorter - and on a route where the hold decides the aeroplane, that shorter list is a real constraint. Tell us the party size and the luggage and we will say which field to plan around before you commit to it.
Can we take golf clubs, and how many sets?
Yes, and going out to the Costa del Sol it is one of the two questions we are asked most. Golf bags are bulky rather than heavy, so what decides the aircraft is hold volume rather than weight. Tell us how many sets are travelling when you enquire: four sets and a fortnight of luggage is a different aeroplane from two sets and cabin bags, and it is far cheaper to establish that before we quote than afterwards.
What does Nice to Malaga cost, and why is the return leg in the price?
From EUR 8 200 one way for the whole aircraft as a floor; there is no honest single figure. The reason the return shows up in an outbound quotation is that most suitable aircraft are based on the Riviera rather than in Spain, so after it drops you the jet has nothing to do at Malaga - it flies back empty or it waits for you. Published hourly ranges for the class run EUR 2,900-3,500, EUR 4,600-9,700 and USD 3,750-4,600 per hour depending on whose broker page you read; those are class rates, not prices for this sector. Ask us for a quotation.
Are there empty legs going out to Spain?
Fewer in this direction than in the other one, and it is worth knowing why before you wait for one. An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, discounted by 50 to 75 percent in the range brokers publish. Because Nice recorded 37,425 business-aviation movements in 2023 against Malaga's 13,835, the aircraft that reposition empty are more often coming back north than going out. The southbound window opens properly in October and November, when the Riviera fleet redeploys for the Alpine winter. Give us a flexible week rather than a fixed day. Current empty legs.
How late can we book, and what stops a departure in high summer?
Usually within a few hours of confirmation, subject to aircraft, crew duty and slots - and outside the summer this is a straightforward route to arrange at short notice. In July and August what stops it is not the flying and not Spain: it is finding a Riviera aircraft that is not already committed, and parking at Nice. Call the operations desk on +357 95 119759, staffed 24 hours a day, and we will tell you straight away whether your timing is achievable rather than promise and check later.
