Olbia to Rome runs 276 km and takes roughly 46 minutes, off Olbia Costa Smeralda and into Ciampino, well within a light cabin. The three-quarters of an hour is the simple part. The awkward parts are a Sardinian apron with nothing spare on it in August and a curfew at the Roman end that quietly decides how late you may leave the coast. Indicative from €2 200 for the aircraft, one way. Send dates and a written quotation follows within 30 minutes; +357 95 119759 is answered at any hour.
The shortest sector we publish into Rome and among the shortest anywhere in the Mediterranean: forty-six minutes over the Tyrrhenian, from the field that serves the Costa Smeralda to the one built for business aviation on the edge of the capital. Whole aircraft, single seats and repositioning flights, arranged around the clock.
REQUEST A QUOTETwo busy airports whose years look nothing like each other. Olbia logged 11,848 business-aviation movements in 2023 and Ciampino 17,129 – but the capital spreads its across twelve months while the island crams almost the whole of its into four. That asymmetry is the route. Nothing about the flying has ever been hard: three-quarters of an hour, worked by light jets and turboprops from June onwards, no distance worth discussing. What is hard in the peak weeks is finding anywhere to stand an aeroplane at the island end, and it presses on a departure just as it presses on an arrival.
At the island end there is no decision to make – this traffic belongs to Olbia – although the other two Sardinian fields are worth understanding, because in a bad August week somebody will propose one of them to you. At the Roman end there are genuinely two airports, and what usually chooses between them is the clock rather than the aeroplane.
| Airport | Codes | Great-circle | Suits you if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Olbia Costa Smeralda | OLB / LIEO | departure | Where practically all of this traffic begins, and the reason the sector exists at all. Roughly half an hour by road from Porto Cervo, close to Poltu Quatu and Cala di Volpe and the marinas along that stretch. Across July and August its apron is among the most crowded in the Mediterranean: flying in and out is easy, standing still is not, and the aeroplane collecting you has quite possibly arrived that same morning for the purpose. |
| Rome Ciampino | CIA / LIRA | 276 km | The default. Fifteen kilometres south-east of the middle of Rome, built around business aviation, and the fastest of the Roman options to be clear of once you are down. Night operating and noise limits apply, and on a summer evening coming off the island those limits are what set your hour – tell us when you want to leave the coast and the arrival window gets confirmed before anything else is settled. |
| Rome Fiumicino | FCO / LIRF | slightly further | Where we go when Ciampino will not take the movement, when the cabin is larger than Ciampino suits, or when the hour you want falls inside the curfew. Further from the centre by car and busier on the handling side, but it keeps a late departure alive rather than cancelling it. |
| Alghero or Cagliari | AHO / LIEA, CAG / LIEE | elsewhere on the island | Alghero lies on the north-west coast, Cagliari in the far south. Both are perfectly real airports and neither substitutes for Olbia when you are starting from the Costa Smeralda – Sardinia is long and mountainous to drive. They appear here so that you can see why we have not offered them. |

Forty-six minutes makes no demand of any aeroplane, which makes this one of the few pages on the site where the smallest sensible cabin is generally the correct one. The live questions are how many of you there are, how much the holiday added to the hold, and – in the peak – which types can be found a stand at Olbia in the first place.
Six to eight seats and 2.27 cubic metres of baggage space. Across three-quarters of an hour its 3,650 km of range means nothing and its sheer availability means everything – it is the type most often free at short notice through an Italian summer, which is why it works this hop harder than any other.
See the Embraer Phenom 300 ›A tight light cabin taking six or seven. Over a sector this brief the smaller aeroplane is often simply the sensible one, and of the three it is the easiest to squeeze onto a full apron.
See the Cessna Citation CJ2 ›Same generation of light cabin, and a type that turns up in our own published Mediterranean empty-leg examples. Ask about it when your dates will move, since short island sectors are exactly where repositioning flights appear.
See the Cessna Citation Bravo ›All three have pages of their own in the fleet section. Bigger cabins work this sector too, most often when a group is swapping aeroplanes in Rome for a longer leg north or east.
From €2 200 one way for the whole aeroplane, light cabin, rounded down. Your date, whatever is genuinely free on it and the airport charges all move the figure — give us the dates and it is confirmed inside half an hour.
We have found no price for this particular city pair published by anyone we would be willing to quote, so the number above is a floor of our own making rather than an offer. The references underneath describe the cabin class and exist so that you have something to hold a quotation against.
Brief sectors behave unlike long ones. Across forty-six minutes the airborne part is a minor share of the bill; the bulk of it is the aeroplane's whole day – crew, handling at each end, landing and parking charges, and above all the flight that delivered the aeroplane to you. Leaving the island at the height of the season, that last item carries the argument: if the machine came down empty that morning because no stand would hold it overnight, that sector is in your bill, and if it was already on the island at the close of somebody else's week, it is not. Ask which one you are reading.

Those are hourly references published by other companies for a class of aeroplane. Over three-quarters of an hour they make a poor guide taken alone, since minimum charges, handling, parking and the positioning flight swamp the arithmetic – which is exactly why a floor is printed alongside them. They are nobody's offer and they oblige nobody. On this route a price means a written quotation from Diamond Executive Aero Services against your own dates. Call +357 95 119759, 24/7.
GET A FIRM PRICEFew airports in European business aviation have a season as sharp as this one's. Something close to twelve thousand movements a year land inside a four-month window, and within that window the closing days of July and the whole of August sit in a class by themselves.
| Period | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| May and early June | The coastline wakes, the marinas fill slowly and the airport is still working in comfort. Aeroplanes are moving into the Mediterranean for the season, which is when short-notice chances surface | A few days of notice generally does it. If you have any latitude over when you travel, these are the weeks to use |
| Late June and September | Full season minus the worst congestion. The Porto Cervo racing in early September bunches departures into the days immediately after it | A fortnight, and more if your dates land near the regatta calendar. Settle the day you leave before you settle the type |
| July and August | The peak, and an unmistakable one. Stands at Olbia are the binding constraint, slots are requested rather than picked, and aeroplanes arrive and go rather than linger. Weekends are hardest of all | A month or more for a weekend. Ask where the aeroplane is coming from, because on this sector that one answer explains most of the quotation |
| October to April | The island empties and the sector very nearly stops. Rome goes on being a year-round business-aviation city, but hardly any of its traffic crosses to Sardinia out of season | Short notice is straightforward and the pricing bottoms out. Confirm what hours Olbia is keeping for a winter date rather than assuming them |
Whatever the month, name the hour. Ciampino carries night operating and noise restrictions, so a departure that slips at the coast can run out of arrival window in Rome. Tell us when you want to go and we will say what genuinely exists on your date.

A fair share of this traffic does not stop in Rome either. Ciampino is where the Sardinian summer hands over to the rest of the itinerary, and the second sector goes together with the first more easily than it does alone.
North-west out of Italy, and the leg most often added when the coast was the holiday and London is where the working week picks up again.
