Aspen is the classic winter trip for New Yorkers who ski, and a summer one too, when the music festival and the Aspen Ideas Festival bring people back to the valley. Aspen-Pitkin County (ASE) is a high-altitude mountain airport with operating restrictions, so not every aircraft type is accepted and the carrier checks performance for the day. Eagle County (EGE), about an hour and a half by car from Aspen, is the usual alternative when weather or aircraft size rules ASE out. On holiday weeks the ramp at Aspen fills up, so parking and arrival times are part of the planning.
| Airport | IATA / ICAO | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teterboro | TEB / KTEB | departure · 2,783 km to ASE | Business-aviation airport in New Jersey with no scheduled airline traffic, about 12 miles from Midtown Manhattan; the default choice for private flights to New York. |
| Westchester County, White Plains | HPN / KHPN | departure · 2,809 km to ASE | Alternative. |
| John F. Kennedy International | JFK / KJFK | departure · 2,809 km to ASE | Alternative. |
| Aspen-Pitkin County | ASE / KASE | arrival | High-altitude mountain airport a few miles from Aspen with operating restrictions; not every aircraft type is accepted, and weather and winter demand can limit arrivals. |
| Eagle County Regional | EGE / KEGE | arrival · 2,776 km from TEB | Mountain airport serving Vail and Beaver Creek, about an hour and a half by car from Aspen; a common alternative when Aspen is restricted or full. |

Aspen is a private-aviation town: private flights made up about three quarters of all flights at the airport in January to March 2021, according to the Aspen Times. Aspen-Pitkin County sits at 7,820 ft with a single 8,006 ft runway, and that combination drives most of the planning.
Aspen to New York (ASE to NYC) is where altitude shows. On warm summer afternoons the thin air reduces takeoff performance, and the operator may limit the fuel or payload to leave ASE; on a light jet that can mean a fuel stop on the way home that the outbound flight did not need. Morning departures and a larger cabin class help. Eastbound, the prevailing westerly winds usually make the return a little quicker in the air.
If Aspen is closed or full, the usual fallback is Eagle County (EGE), 2,776 km from Teterboro, with a car to Aspen; Garfield County Regional at Rifle (RIL) is another option further west. Flying from elsewhere? See Chicago to Aspen, Los Angeles to Aspen and Dallas to Aspen.
